From the moment a student has graduated college, he or she normally has about half of year before beginning to pay back their student loans. Still, there are some cases in which students can receive student loan forgiveness for some or all of their loans. However, the student loan forgiveness doesn't fall out of the sky: if you want it, you have to trade some of your time for it. Happily, there is more than one way in which you can do this.
In order to qualify for the student loan forgiveness, there are some requirements that you have to meet: you need to be involved in volunteer work, to serve in the military, to teach in a school for low-income or special education students or other "teacher shortage areas".
Also, the volunteers for Peace Corps can defer payment on their Stafford, Perkins, direct or consolidation loans. Moreover, some can even receive student loan forgiveness for their Perkins Loans. The catch is this: for each of the first two years of service, 15% or the loan will be canceled. For the third and forth year of volunteering, 20% per year will be canceled resulting in a total of 70% for a four year commitment.
"Volunteers in Service to America" (or simply VISTA) is a private non-profit group, dedicated to the eradication of poverty in the US. VISTA can also be the answer for those in need of partial student loan forgiveness, and they can achieve it through volunteer work. As far as VISTA is concerned, one year of commitment is the equal of a $4,725 education award. As well as this, the student loans could be placed in deferment or forbearance while you're volunteering for VISTA.
There are many other non-profit organizations, as VISTA, that help students receive student loan forgiveness. You just have to find the one that is the best suited for your needs.
